I just saw this Rotten Tomatoes video and thought it was worth sharing. I wonder how many times "coincidences" like this have happened? It's one thing if they both did a show about lions, but quite another to steal all the characters and the plot.
There's a fine line I think. There are some archetypes that are used over and over... the dumb sidekick... the lusty "wolf" character.. the clean cut "good guy", the shady hoodlum... I mean there are tons that are used over and over again in cartoons and story telling.
But blatantly ripping off ALL the characters, the setting, and the story.. that's a whole 'nuther ball of wax.
I'm sure it happens all the time... but it makes me particularly mad when Disney does it. "No one will know", they think in 1991... then the internet happens and they are busted.
Oh, Kimba? Yeah, I remembering reading about that years ago on snopes.com. Aladdin is another one, look up The Thief and the Cobbler.
But yeah, it's really sad they could never sue Disney because Disney has some of the best lawyers in the world. Disney never really was that original with movies to begin with, they're all mostly based off books or old fairy tales anyway. This stuff though, this is just ripoffs.
Second fun fact about Lion King: There is a deleted scene in which Scar tries to rape/seduce Nala! That was the original reason she left home. They included it in one of their bonus features.
I'll admit though, when it first came out and when I was young I actually liked Lion King, but I liked Tex Avery too!
